Friends & Associates
With more and more designers blurring the lines of gender specific fashion; Matthew Edelstein‘s Spring/Summer 2013 collection for Friends & Associates, as seen in the latest issue of Visual Tales Magazine, is definitely timely. Matthew, a longtime stylist and creative director for the year old brand, studied fashion design first so the move to start the women’s wear line was a homecoming of sorts. The new collection as shot by the renowned Arthur Elgort and styled by David Vandewal puts a twist on all this; women’s clothes based on men’s iconic uniforms, worn on some of the season’s freshest male faces. We asked Matthew and David for their takes on the collection and shoot
Matthew: The Friends & Associates Resort and S/S 2013 collections are inspired by iconic uniforms of all kinds; we combine details from military and sport in strong color and updated proportions. These boys look so fresh we call them ‘Candy Land Cadets’.
David: We created with Arthur Elgort a sort of cinematic men’s fashion story around one of my favorite movie The Last Detail by director Hal Ashby in ’73 starring a young, naughty bad-ass Jack Nicholson. Navy sailors are ordered to bring a young offender to prison but decide to show him a last good time along the way. It’s a tough drama, but they become in a complicated way, buddies for life.
